The other kind of pump you need is an Air Pump. The Air Pumps are as important as the Water Pumps because without air in the system your fish will die, and they’ll do it fast because even water life needs oxygen. In fact, the water oxygen level, called dissolved oxygen, is one of the most important water quality components in an Aquaponics system; and it needs to be monitored often. The best levels of dissolved oxygen are close to 80% saturation, which translates as 6-7 milligrams per liter (parts per million--ppm). Levels below 3 milligrams per liter are a hardship on aquatic life and levels under l milligram per liter are deadly. By aerating the Grow Beds, the plants will get more oxygen for healthier, faster growth; and the grow bed is where the bio-filtration takes place, requiring lots of oxygen for the process.
